How Clinton Decimated the Military

How Clinton Decimated the Military
By Michael Reagan

On Friday night, Rep. Duncan Hunter, former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and now its ranking Republican member, appeared on the Hannity and Colmes show on Fox, and I was astonished to hear him castigated for failing to see that our troops in Iraq needed equipment.

He was specifically challenged on matter of the alleged lack of body armor for our troops in Iraq, and the administration’s alleged failure to ensure that our troops had the protection the armor affords them.

Ignored were certain inconvenient facts such as the amount of body armor that was available under Bill Clinton, which was zero. Today under President Bush and thanks to Duncan Hunter’s work in the Armed Services Committee, which authorized the funds to purchase the body armor, the armed services have one million sets of body armor. That’s one million!

It’s puzzling to see the media ignore the disastrous cutbacks in our armed services that took place under Bill Clinton, and the extraordinary efforts of the Bush administration and Hunter’s committee to beef up our military.

People have got to understand what this man did to our military. Jingo, you were in the service then; I wish you'd come on here and tell it. The Clintons--yes, I'm gonna say both of them--absolutely ruined our ability to defend ourselves as we used to be able to.

That they did not bring this country totally down--or invite severe, repeated attacks--is a miracle. I swear, if the muslims had known, 9/11 would have come sooner--and been worse.

If Hillary gets elected, how much more damage are they going to have a chance to do?

You are right, it takes at least 6 years to put in an order, produce and deploy body armor. Hah! You guys are what Donald Rumsfeld called "dead enders". The last throes of support for Bush, defender of the shores of Texas and Dick "I had other priorities during VietNam" Cheney. This is entirely laughable. Defense cutbacks started under Dick "I had other priorities" Cheney, as part of the peace dividend. Yes, base closings, ending funding for many weapons and the like. Anyone who believes this dribble in this article has zero credibility, none. And by the way, anecdotal evidence by one person in the service is even funnier. Yes, Jingo is a defense spending expert because, heck, he was drawing a paycheck then. Come on, get real! Why not read some history!!!

Mr. Vet--I'll let Jingo take care of himself. You have no idea who he is, who I am, Who Tom, Bobcat--or anyone else. Clinton HIMSELF says he cut the military. I'm only taking the man at his word. I was certainly alive during the Clinton reign; I know damn well what he did.

And anyone can SAY they're a 'vet'; you'll have to do better than that to prove it here.

Hey POVet. As the house progressive here, I take offense at your tone. I dont know who you are or where you came from but you better show a bit more respect when you come into Verityinks house. And this is coming from a progessive and a vet.

Thank you, LES. Maybe if he had a track record here, or something, it would be different, but he just showed up like some stepchild and was rude to one and all--without making a particular point!

But the Muzzies DID try 9/11 before 9/11 -- remember, they tried to blow up the WTC by setting off a massive bomb in the underground parking garage, hoping that tower would collapse into the other. Their calculations were way off and that is why it did not succeed.

Guess who was co-president during that first attack? I seem to recall a great big nothing from our first black president in response to that ... or to the attack on the USS Cole which killed many sailors.

I think he did fire some Tomahawks at some buildings in the desert and used very stern language but, other than that, nuttinggggg.

Remember the Sergeant in "Hogan's Heroes"? "I knooooow nuttingggg!"

DONAL I finally read this article, sorry it took so long. I enlisted under the elder Bush and that 6 year obligation ended in late 1993.

I spent 4 of those years "haze gray and under way" on drug ops, NATO exercises, and the Gulf War. Morale ammong us squids was still VERY high under Bush and probably would have stayed that way under Clinton if he hadn't decided to make a social fu--ing experiment out of our confined berthing area! You have absolutely no clue what cramped quarters are until you put 35 men and all of their personal belongings into a 25X30 area.

Then he went and cut our budget! Try odering new radar parts on a limited budget and then having the Skipper scream at you and the Division officer about a radar that's not functioning while Arabs are running MIGS over your zone!

The Clinton abortion of a Presidency didn't effect some of the smaller (and more important)things I did in the Navy. But the big ticket items were hurt as badly as the morale of the sailors.

6 years and a squid... Were you in the Submarine Service?

LIM I was a 6yo. To go into some rates requiring advanced electronics training it was a requirement to give our old uncle 6 years instead of four. I was originally a guided missile Fire Controlman.
