Thousands of opponents and supporters of the U.S. presence in Iraq converged Saturday in Washington for a day of demonstrations.
The anti-war ANSWER Coalition held a rally at Lafayette Square holding signs and wearing t-shirts bearing slogans that made their message clear. One man was wearing a shirt with only one bold word on it, "Impeach."
The large crowd was shouting, "The people united will end this war."
The mass of protesters filled most of Lafayette Park, and spilled into Pennsylvania Avenue in front of from the White House.
At the rally anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan said that protesting was no longer enough, saying that those against the war should shut down college campuses and federal buildings in order to get their opinions heard.
Former U.S. Attorney Ramsey Clark echoed the sentiments of some of the signs and t-shirts being displayed at the rally by calling for the impeachment of both the president and the vice president.
Former Presidential candidate Ralph Nader blasted congress for not cutting off the war funding, calling them "spineless" and "gutless."
As the protesters made their way to the Capitol the counter-protesters lined the streets taunting the protesters as they made their way for their planned "die-in." Several of the marching protesters were disguised as caricatures of the president and vice president.
The counter-protesters held their own rally several blocks away near the Washington Monument. The two rallies remained relatively peaceful, with the exception of some shoving between the two groups that was quickly taken care of by the police.
The counter-protesters called their rally The Gathering of the Eagles, and was comprised of several Vietnam War veterans.
"We just want to remind people that freedom of speech is not really free, and that people had to pay to protect that right," said one man at the counter-protest. "And were here to show that there is another point of view."
Congressman Duncan Hunter, a GOP presidential hopeful, made a surprise visit to the counter-protest. He said "it's for this generation that we will win this war on terror."

I don't understand that their are any people who call themselves Americans who would go out of their way to destroy a tribute to heros!
What is wrong with these people? Where do they come from? Were these the kids that we educated in our schools? Then I must ask, "What are they learning?"

AoW had wanted to go, but her back is touchy. She and Mr. AoW went to the last one, the GOE were great and insisted on respect(and no packpacks) near the monuments and memorials.
Her take on the protestors was rather pointed, most looked like they were unacquainted with soap and water...

I read MORGANS article in Fire Society and was duly impressed with his first two points and his grasp, although somewhat naive, of history. But it wasnt until I read his comments here about bludgeoning fellow Americans with baseball bats that I came back to my senses.
That is the MORGAN we have come to know and love, ready to kill his neighbors.
Nice... But the really pathetic part of this is when one realizes that the patriots are on the other side of the issue. True patriots, just like Americas first patriots, often have to stand up to government when it missteps its bounds. What would Jefferson think of America spending blood and treasure attacking Italy after Bunker Hill. Think about it.

Another point about International A.N.S.W.E.R..Les they are an enemy of America period. They are an organization of traitors (communists) in our own ranks who make common cause with North Korea, one of our avowed enemies. Morganster, There were several groups who organized the rally, not just ANSWER or the other group. What you fail to recognize is that everyone who was there on Saturday is not a "maggot infested vermin". If you were there, you would have seen kids, housewives, mothers and fathers, your neighbors, your kids teachers and more. Open your eyes. Everthing is not a conspiracy out to ruin America. Some folks are just plain patriots in the mold of Henry, Jefferson and others, standing up for what is right. I think sometimes that you and the rest of the 27%ers are afraid that seeing the reality of the incompetence of this administration will somehow reflect on you. It wont. The majority of Americans who no longer support this administration will welcome you when you open your eyes to the incompetence.

Those are two mutually exclusive trains of thought. If you're having members--many of them paid off by A.N.S.W.E.R. CodePink, MoveOn etc.--vote as many times as possible on an issue, so that one person throws in 50-100-200+ votes, then it obviously does not reflect the truth that only ONE person actually agreed with whatever topic the poll was measuring.
Yet you and yours put such stock in the polls and you REALLY think--you're desperate to think--that 'most of merica' thinks like you do!
Well, let me give you a lesson in confidence and right-and-wrong: I don't need ANYBODY to agree with me to be confident in my beliefs. My thoughts, reasoning, and intelligence--my experience and my God--lead me to know the difference between what is right and what is wrong--and I'd feel that way if nobody on the face of the earth jumped up and said 'right on!' or 'way to be!' everytime I voiced an opinion.

A quick note. Only wingnuts quote these web based polls. They are too open to Freeping. When I say polls show Americans do not support this president or his incompetent execution of this war I am talking about polls conducted by Faux News (gasp!) and other REPUTABLE polling organizations. These emoters seem to think that these polls they so often quote or COOK can even change reality! When I'm out of step with a poll I give it exactly 2 seconds thought if I believe it's a legitimate poll.
