Capitol Hill's Losers

Capitol Hill's Losers
By Bob Tyrrell

The approval ratings of the Democratic Congress continue their swoon. When Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi led their enlightened hordes onto Capitol Hill early this year, they promised liberation and progress. They would raise the minimum wage. Homeland security was to be made foolproof. Medicare's drug prices would be lowered by congressional writ.

Moreover, they had a scheme to lower interest rates on college loans. Finally something vast and ingenious was going to be done about the war in Iraq. Possibly the congressional Democrats were going to yank our military from that inhospitable country and replace it with the Peace Corps or perhaps the Good Humor Man.

Of course, the fulminating Democrats have accomplished none of the above. They continue to shriek about Republican mendacity and corruption — though such misdemeanors were winked at during the Clinton years.

They continue their ongoing investigations, and in the case of Attorney Alberto Gonzales they may undertake the capital's first exorcism. But as to their aforementioned early promises, they remain inert. The term "Do Nothing Congress" is being heard among good government types and concerned lobbyists.

"The American people are understandably fearful about another attack like the one we sustained on Sept. 11, 2001. But it is the duty of the commander in chief to lead the country away from the grip of fear, not into its grasp."
-- in today's Post, Charles C. Krulak, commandant of the Marine Corps, 1995 to 1999. Joseph P. Hoar, commander in chief of U.S. Central Command, 1991 to 1994.

Support The Troops - The Bush Way!

"The Bush administration today threatened to a veto a House defense spending bill over a 3.5 percent pay raise for U.S. soldiers and a $40/month increase in benefits for military widows, among other provisions. The legislation passed the House today 397-27.

"Troops don’t need bigger pay raises", White House budget officials said Wednesday in a statement of administration policy laying out objections to the House version of the 2008 defense authorization bill. […]

Bush budget officials said the administration “strongly opposes” both the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling extra pay increases “unnecessary.”

Quick, somebody discredit the White House on this!

Dont you hate it when facts are just so...so...factual? Hard to deny where W's priorities are these days.

Bob Tyrrell is the best! Not only is he right, but he's also funny as hell! For those of you who didn't read the whole article, what's keeping you?

Les that little piece that you included from "thinkprogress" is such abject bullshit! Does ANYTHING embarrass or shame you? You're such a lying propagandist.

If the President could get a CLEAN bill for raising the pay and bennies for our fighting men and women who do it so fast it would make your lefty head spin! As it is the traitors in congress (Dems)refuse to quit playing politics with support for our troops. What a disgusting lot!

DONAL if it was ONLY pork the Prez probably would have signed it! I love the guy BUT he's shown no aversion to spending. The Dems probably loaded it full of poison pills. This way they could say, "we tried to give the brave troops a pay raise, but the President shot it down."

DONAL I literally hate these treacherous leftists! They are working OVERTIME for the defeat of America against a bunch of head chopping savages! If we surrender and these barbarians follow us home, and they will, I would HATE to be a prominent lefty...

Hey Morgan, you are starting to worry me. First of all, it wasnt the Iraq spending bill, come on try thinking this through before your head explodes. Secondly, if the terrorists really wanted to follow us home they would be doing it NOW while we have insufficient port controls and our troops are engaged elsewhere. Do you think they would rather take the chance of getting killed by the finest fighting machine the world has ever known in Iraq or come here while they are all away? It is really naive to think they only want to fight us when we are ready for them.

You need to tone down the hatred a couple of notches. Some of the stuff you have posted is the kind of thing that people look at and say "well, I guess we saw the signs".

And the last comment, "I would hate to be a prominent lefty", that is a perfect example. Get a grip Morgan, that sounds like you are aware of some kind of threat. Are you?

LES--Don't attempt to diagnose my good long-term posters and friends...

What Morgan means is that, what with you Leftists' libby policies on gays, living together, bath houses, violent demonstrations in public, speaking out against this country etc. (all things not allowed under sharia law) if the muslims come here, they will, indeed, come for you first.

First of all Les, I didn't say it WAS the Iraq spending Bill. Nor did I think it, thanks for confirming that.

As for your problem conceptualizing terrorists following us home and taking courage in the weakness and treachery of the Dems, why don't you believe THEM when they say these EXACT same things?! Zawahiri (weirdbeardus extremus) has already praised Harry Reid for his "statesmanship" and said our congressional behavior shows "weakness." You need to read Bernard Lewis' latest piece in the Opinion Journal.

Al Qaida has already said that the fight is IN IRAQ! You don't have to believe me, I'm just a patriot. Since you leftist nuts seem to think that they (Al Qaida) are Allah's only terrorists, why not fight them there? We will also have to deal with Hizballah and other groups eventually, but don't worry, your lefty buddies will find good hiding spots to give you guys time to bone up on the koran, learn arabic, and grow a beard!

Les I couldn't give two s--ts what you think about my attitude where backstabbing treachery is concerned! That's what the Dems have become: treacherous backstabbers. Do you think we all missed the BS you posted earlier about our war time President opposing pay raises for our troops? You have NO shame!

Why do you lefty wack jobs absolutely REFUSE to learn from the past? Do you think that the Mullahs will respect your "right to dissent"? If so you're denser than I thought.

The article is dead on. Bush's numbers reflect not only the traditional ennui in the 7th term of a second presidential term, but some expended political capital. What the present Congress has done besides smoke and mirrors, I know not.

les, you make me smile.

The bad news for you is that a lot of us aren't sycophants who blindly follow BUsh (especially on the immigration situation). I know lefties walk lock-step and Republicans eat their young, which I dsapprove of, at least in public....but to come here and rant as if we're all fawning over Mr. Bush, ignoring things we don't like, and YOU are going to SHOW THOSE CONSERVATIVES at this site the truth, is just silly. It must be hard for the left to understand that....right?

Your quotes from the commandants are outdated, but I thank you for them. It shows how much the pendulem swings; there are PLENTY of generals and soldiers who'd laugh these quotes down, as you know.

What's it going to take for the Left to understand that the lefty news you read could be (gasp!) wrong? Hey, you're on a side whose leaders think that, for the first time in history, it's a GREAT idea to tell the worst enemy we've ever had when we're quitting!! THAT's scary, isn't it? I'd think twice, if I were you.

Z,
Nice well reasoned, and well tempered post. No, I have no thought of converting anyone on this place, that is for sure! The Kool-Aid was drunk a long time ago here. I just like rattling the cage every once in a while. Kind of like Donal does over at DU.

But honestly, if George Bush bit the head off of kittens and declared that he was the son of Satan, there are people here who would still somehow rationalize that it was those traitor DemoRATS (or whatever funny little name you come up with) were behind it.

About the General's quotes, yes, they are a couple of monts old, but the list of honorable, brave men and women who feel the incompetence of this administration is forcing them to speak out grows every day. Thankfully our troops still have the honor that Bush and Cheney never knew. I personally dont think either one of them has the guts and honor to carry any one of their lunches, from the Chair of the Joint Chiefs, down the lowest PFC. It is Bush and Cheney who know no shame. They have de-Baathized the Iraqi government but have installed their political hacks all over our government. Shameful.

les, there are also growing lists of soldiers re-upping because "we feel it's the right thing to do". ARe they stupid? They've been there, some of these generals have not.

As for kitten's heads being bitten; how about our media? Why don't they discuss Byrd's ex KKK recruitment position? WHy don't they slam T. Kennedy for his part in this ridiculous new amnesty bill? Why not have them stop for a second and give SOME credence to, for example, the swift boat guys who finally sank the media's hero, Kerry.

I personally find it unAmerican for a media with this much bias..and power. They show us what THEY think we should know. And I blame the little bit of Conservative media which doesn't hold peoples' feet to the fire. I also find it unAmerican for leftists to approve of a one-sided media. It's unethical and the ruination of America.

And it's working. Just talking up gay rights, so subtly insulting those who don't want marriage redefined in every TV show, talk show, and the insults to politicians who want an ammendment. I"m only using that as an example. Nobody is respected for ideas other than Leftist ideas, the media's responsible for that, and I"m seeing great damage done all the way around.

Anon,
As a vet, I would be the last one to criticize a soldier, I just point out what many soldiers and commanders are saying. These are poeple on the ground who see the big picture. Yes, I thought we were winning in Viet Nam. We had complete control of the valley we were ordered to take. But we didnt see the entire picture including the corruption at the highest levels. Same here. I admire anyone who re-ups for whatever reason. As one grunt said, it is a lifestyle he has chosen. I commend him for that choice. But lets not forget what General George Patton said in 1944. "If we have to ask a soldier if we are winning, we have probably already lost". Now I for one know we have not lost, we won. We marched right up into Baghdad and routed the Iraqi army and resistance. My point has always been, we won, lets get out. This is a civil war which we either have to choose sides or get out of the way. Too many of our finest men and women have been 'collateral damage' in their civil war.

Les - That is damned nonsense! Our party takes responsibility for things and resigns. Remember Rumsfeld, Foley, Wolfie etc.? It's YOUR lousy Demoncrat party that blames it all on us, Les.

You've got a bit too much projection going on here.... You've NEVER taken responsibility for anything you've done.

WE have - and if that;'s Kool-Aid, give me another glass! (Try not to insult Donal too much; it's a miracle she lets you post your garbage on her site.)

Anon,
I'm not sure about your references to Byrd or Lott of any other's past sins. I wasnt referring to that at all. We all have skeletons in our respective political closets but I would wager if we went back in time your closet would have to hold more than mine.

As far as the media, yeah, I have a problem with the media also. Other than the fact that I hate the fact that the media is by far right leaning, my biggest gripe is the 'he said, she said' type journalism. You can see that in the debate about anything controversial. I want the press to air both sides but when something is completely bogus, they need to flag it and flag it hard. Think about the Swift Boaters. Nothing has been proven but there wild and widely disproven accusations were treated by the media as fact. Never mind that the Swift Boat losers changed their stories and their accusations had nothing but their own fuzzy memories and party affiliations, while Kerry had citations and commendations.
It is a sad day when allegations are given the same weight as facts. Just like the claim that Clinton stole everything from the White House. The old 'some say' strawman is not the same as an actual indictment or subpoena. I find so many people who still believe that they trashed the White House. But then again, Fox News wants you to believe that, as well as things like Hussein was behind 9/11 and there is no such thing as evolution.

Bobcat,
First of all, I have nothing but the highest regard for Donal. I think she knows that.

Secondly, lets see...Rumsfeld should have resigned after the looting of Baghdad. The fact that he stayed on to the very, very, very end insulted the American people and more importanly our troops. Period.

Wolfie, well that was an honorable man for sure. Let see, leads us into Iraq with no plan, tells General Shineski he was way off the mark in his field of expertise (should have resigned then), then blames the entire fiasco on Bush's incompetence (true but he is just as incompetent). Lets see, heads off to the World Bank and sets his girlfriend up with a 92% raise. Oh, yeah he resigned...but not for another month.

Foley, well, if you recall that story, he resigned only because he was about to be ridden out of town on a rail because, lord forbid, he jeopardize the Repubs chance for re-election. Oh wait, they wanted him to stay, even though they knew about his shenanigans because he was a good fund raiser...oops

And finally, when will Gonzales resign? The world awaits that one. Maybe he didnt get the memo?
